The at-home thyroid test measures your thyroid hormone levels using a dry blood sample. A physician reviews the results to assess whether you have an overactive or underactive thyroid gland. It will specifically test four markers: TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), the two thyroid function hormones free T3 and free T4, and the antibody, TPO (thyroid perioxidase), which is an indication of auto-immune diseases when elevated.

What are thyroid hormones?

The thyroid gland in our throat releases two key hormones: fT3 and fT4 (also called thyroxine). Healthy thyroid and a balanced TSH, fT3, fT4 hormone levels are critical for normal metabolism, cardiovascular health, and proper development. It maintains our body temperature, psychological well-being, appetite, energy levels, and sex drive.

Why measure thyroid hormones?

An underactive thyroid (a condition called hypothyroidism) will slow down our metabolism in absence of the thyroid hormones causing weight gain, loss of appetite, fatigue, and symptoms of premature aging. The slow metabolism will interfere with our body's temperature regulation and will increase sensitivity to cold. Other symptoms include dry skin due to thinning of veins, constipation, and abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding. In severe cases the hormone deficiency causes enlargement of the thyroid gland in throat, called goiter, a common sign of iodine deficiency in developing countries. Since seventy-percent of the body's iodine is used by thyroid gland, an iodine deficiency will impact the thyroid hormone balance.

In the opposite case, a hyperactive thyroid (a condition called hyperthyroidism) will speed up the metabolism resulting in increased appetite and unexpected weight loss. The overworking thyroid will release excess thyroid hormones which will cause anxiety, nervousness, and difficulty in sleeping. It will also increase sensitivity to heat and in rare cases, chest pains and palpitations. Symptoms of elevated thyroid hormone levels are completely opposite to low thyroid hormone levels, except both cases cause fatigue due to slow or overworking metabolism.

FAQs

FAQs About Thyroid Test:

Q: Can I purchase the test across US?

A: Except New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Maryland, our tests are available in all 46 states. NY, NJ, RI and MD state laws require separate health regulations and we are in the process of getting approval.

Q: What does the kit contain and how do I use it?

A: Our thyroid test at home kit contains a blood card to collect few droplets of blood, a pair of lancets for finger-pricking, instructions on how to collect the sample, and a form requesting basic information including date and time of collection. The directions are straight forward and easy to follow.

Q: How long does it take to receive the results?

A: Once the test is ordered at RxHomeTest.com, you will receive the kit within 3-5 business days with a paid return envelope. Once you ship the sample and it is received by our lab, you should receive your results within 5 business days.

Q: What do I expect from the report?

A: The report with your test results will be easy to understand and will have all the necessary details. It will mark your TSH, fT3, fT4, and TPO levels on a healthy range for your age and life style. The report will also specify what are the expected low and high ranges for each marker. It will briefly discuss what your numbers mean and what next steps should be taken to maintain healthy thyroid hormone levels.

Q: Can I use my insurance to pay for the test?

A: No. Unfortunately, the insurance process is extremely complex and we are not yet able to negotiate our low prices with them. Our tests are generally cheaper than what you pay for an out-of-pocket test. You do not need to visit a physician or a lab which saves both time and money. The tests include a physician's prescription and review, and we strongly encourage to take the results to your doctor for further consultation. You can typically pay for the tests with your HSA/FSA but we encourage you to talk to your insurance provider before getting an reimbursement from your plan.

Q: How reliable are my results?

A: We have partnered with CLIA-certified labs that are used by physicians across the US. These labs are regulated by the states, as well as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Majority of the tests from these labs are FDA approved to ensure they meet the proper regulatory requirements. Additionally, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) requires inter-laboratory tests to ensure the ranges established by each lab do not drift or are not out of acceptable ranges. This is done by regularly testing reference samples between different labs. Finally, the labs test thousands of sample for different age groups and health conditions, and have well established reference data to compare your results against this large pool.

Q: Can you recommend what therapy should I take if my thyroid hormone levels are low?

A: Unfortunately, no. As a lab test provider we can only test and report out data from your samples. We are not authorized to provide any medical recommendations. But we strongly encourage you to discuss the results with your doctor for next steps.

High thyroid hormone levels indicate hyperthyroidism and people experience sudden weight loss, mood swings, restlessness, hyperactivity, and heat intolerance. Order the thyroid test online to find the reasons for any of these symptoms.

  4. Problems with thyroid function can manifest in several different ways. A TSH blood test, or T4 blood test or TPO ab test alone may not be sufficient.
